Short Story: Till Death Do Us Part
A short story written by Enitsua…..
As He browsed his marriage Album, he was overwhelmed by acute nostalgia. He being a creative type had segmented the 100 page album.
The first 15 pages were dedicated to pictures of Himself and her when they were just dating. He Titled it ‘Happy ever before’. The next 40 pages were decorated with pictures of the traditional union, white and court, he dubbed that one ‘Happy ever’.
The rest of the pages were kept for the future. He was to name it ‘Happy ever after’.
As he flipped some more, he smiled even more. It hadn’t been easy, he had loved her since the begining. They had been friends for almost a decade. One day he asked her out and she gave a blatant “NO”. She did acquiesce after two years, thanks to His relentless persevearance, they dated for a while, they fell madly in love and then decided to expose their love for each other in the alter.
He was about turning the page, when his dearly beloved wife put her hand and stopped the page. She said she loved the picture.
It was a picture of them some eleven years ago posing in small studio. They both looked at the picture then stared at each other and for a moment he taught he saw tears haording in her big emerald eyes. This had to be love, if it wasn’t love then no couple came close to love like these two.
He showered his wife with gifts, luxury trips and all the comfort in the world and she in turn saturated her husband with the best cuisines and earth quaking s3x. Life was good.
It was time for Him to attend his annual bar conference. Henry had made a pac with himself that within eight years he would assume the most coverted title in the law practice, the senior advocate of Nigeria (S.AN). He had to make his family comfortable and his wife proud of him. If not of this commitment, nothing else in the world would have taken him away from his pink. He fondly called her that.
While he searched for his tie, so he could pack up, he saw something, an old scragly note. It had been written by himself several years ago, the night she agreed to be his girlfriend, also they first time they made love. She had asked him how long he would be with her and he responded by means of a note. He wrote “Till death do us part”.
He picked up the note, closed his eye and kissed it, then shoved it into his travelling box and hurried to the airport. That travelling box was his favourite.
On the plane, all he could think of was her large glowing eyes, her contagous smile, her fair soft skin. The melody of her voice rang frequently in his ears. He was missing his baby. Not to worry he had pleaded with his trusted friend and best man to stay in his house, so his wife doesn’t feel too lonely. Still he was missing his baby, his pink.
On landing in his destination he was told that the conference had been postponed due to the mysterious death of the bar president. In 45 minutes he was back, in the front door of his home. His heart pounding with joy. Home is indeed where the heart lies.
On entering his parlour, he heard and saw something simultaneously, a sight that got him dazed and made his consciousness skip. He had dashed into his parlour just in time to see his unclad wife bouncing, writhing and moaning uncontrolably untop of his best friend. She was screaming and acting in ways she never did with him.
The two were going at it and sweating profusely, when they jumped
apart on seeing him. Their eyes suddenly filled with remorse and
sincere apology.
After the shock faded and reality hit. He taught of rushing for his gun and killing the two then blasting himself but in another instance he decided against it, he just walked away, taking back his box with him. He knew he would never return to that house.
He would sell it off. As for his wife and friend. They were history. There was crying, pleading, apologies even interventions but they all fell on deaf ears.
His mind was made up. He wanted no business with the past. The image of that night was too painfull to bear, no one deserved to relive such reality.
He had forgiven his wife but that was all he could offer.
…………..
It had been ten years since and now he lived in another city, single and happy but the scar remained. He was on his way to his S.A.N conferement. His dream had come true.
In his small comfy home, he tucked his travelling box ready to go then he felt something bulge at the purse side of his travelling box, he had not utilised that purse in ten years.
He squeezed his hand in and he retrieved a ball of paper. Mystified, he unfurled it and realised it was a note, very rumpled, barely elegible.
It wrote “Till death do us part”.
